Triathlon training Ontario sports camp for girls

Try a “Tri” at Camp Ak-O-Mak

Long before triathlons gained the popularity they enjoy today, Ak-O-Makkers were Swim-Run-Canoeing against their brother camp, Chikopi. Today our coaches teach girls what they need to know to tackle a triathlon of any distance, using enjoyable practice events such as aquathlons, duathlons, transition events and mountain bike obstacle courses.

Triathlon basics

A triathlon is a multi-sport endurance event consisting of swimming, cycling, and running in immediate succession over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall course completion time, including timed “transitions” between the individual swim, bike, and run components.

Transition areas are positioned both between the swim and bike segments (T1), and between the bike and run segments (T2) and are where the switches from swimming to cycling and cycling to running occur. The time spent in T1 and T2 are included in the overall time of the race.

The nature of the sport focuses primarily on persistent and often periodized training in each of the three disciplines, as well as combination workouts and general strength conditioning.

The Ak-O-Mak difference

To help campers improve their transition times and their overall performance our coaches employ various, enjoyable techniques and activities. We use practice events such as aquathlons (continuous, two-stage races involving swimming followed by running) and duathalons (events that consist of a running leg, followed by a cycling leg and then another running leg, similar to triathlons). We also hold mountain bike obstacle courses to improve the cycling component of the triathlon.
