Here at Ak-O-Mak, every day’s a GREAT day!

The past few days we have been fortunate enough to have beautiful weather on campus. The bell rang in the morning waking us from our dreams. The girls have been flying down to Sandy Beach to hop into the water and get their swims completed. The water has been quite warm most mornings.

Down to inspection for some cleaning up, making beds, folding towels and sweeping under bunks. Our morning classes have included an amalgamation of aggressive rugby practices, and the Zen-like calming styles of yoga, adrenaline pumping ropes, baseball, aerobics, lacrosse game and swimming – YEAH! The mornings have been absolutely fantastic up here at camp; we even had Alex Baumann coach the girls in one of their morning swim practices.

We’ve been so lucky to have guests up here at camp, Mike Moir, the commodore of the Ak-O-Mak Canoe club came for a visit and the girls had the opportunity to paddle in a C15 war canoe. Camp Ak-O-Mak is the ONLY camp in the world registered as a canoe club and during our 7 week session we competed in regattas against other canoe clubs that paddle year round. We’ve had a long history of great success in competitive paddling including numerous divisional, provincial and national championship wins. That’s pretty exciting and brag-worthy in my opinion. It certainly is a sight to be seen when they’re out on the water with 14 paddles moving in sync.

After lunch the Rest Hour has been enjoyed by campers and counsellors alike and it has been quiet in the cabin line.

Rest Hour ends when the Oooogah rings and everyone has been quick out of their cabins Team Comp. It’s in full steam and the competition has been getting quite ferocious. Memory Scavenger Hunt, Back-Field Relays, and a new one at Camp Ak-O-Mak…CHALLENGIA! (Challenge and Trivia all wrapped in a super fun package!) It had campers answering trivia questions about camp history and completing various tasks from running to a certain destination in a specified amount of time or portaging a canoe.

Evening activities have ranged quite a bit, open water-front, mandatory bath, and my favourite a costume dance party, the Main House was pumping with music and the girls danced and sang until the stars came out, it was all smiles on camp.

Parents please keep in mind that we have 96 girls here for the two week session, that is 96 pairs of parents that all want to talk to their very own Ak-O-Mak Angel. We ask that you please only call your daughter once a week while she is up here so other girls can have the chance to hear from their families waiting to hear about their adventures as well.

Please watch the website tomorrow for the official results from the Knoepfli Mile Swim.

Happy Camping!
