Ak-O-Mak Alumni at 40th Annual Ft. Lauderdale Ocean Mile Rough Water Swim
It was a windy day under brilliant sunny skies for this year's Ocean Mile Rough Water Swim held along beautiful Ft. Lauderdale beach. Hundreds of swimmers representing colleges from across the USA and Canada participated in this exciting open water swim as part of their Christmas training camp at the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
As our alumni are aware, this race was started by the late Buck Dawson, founding director of the ISHOF and Camp Ak-O-Mak's beloved owner and camp director for over 50 years. The race is a perennial favourite for locals as well and is attended by swimmers ranging in age from 10 to 80 years!
Thanks to the dedication and tireless efforts of Chikopi's Bob Duenkel, (who also works for the Hall of Fame) the 40th Ocean Mile Swim went off without a hitch. Ak-O-Mak was represented with alumni volunteers Denise(nee Dickie) and her daughter Caroline Israels, fencing coach Nataley Nagy, camp doc Catherine McAndie and her daughter, Marion Denny. Chikopi's Colette and Teagan Duenkel rounded out the camps' representation by cheering the swimmers across the finish line!
If any of you are ever visiting Florida, be sure to visit the International Swimming Hall of Fame's magnificent museum. It is an impressive repository of our swimming history and, (perhaps most importantly!) is uniquely linked to Camp Ak-O-Mak and Camp Chikopi!
