August 19-21 Update – jam packed with fun events and athletic endeavours!

We have been enjoying some unseasonably warm weather here at camp! Throughout this heatwave, we have been making full use of the waterfront to stay cool. On August 19th, cabin four and cabin two practiced their canoeing skills, cabin five and cabin one went on kayak adventures, while cabin three had a synchro competition. That afternoon was full of choice periods for our campers designed to keep them cool! We had a road bike ride option, a sailing option, a stand-up paddleboard option, and a small boat lesson. Then we all reconvened at the main dock for a spirited open waterfront.

The Ak-o-Mak golf course was just finalized this week and campers have been enjoying their golf lessons with our greens keepers Michael and Hannah. There are four holes in the course and the girls are learning proper technique while enjoying the addition of this sport to the program!

On August 21st we had another aquatic morning. All cabins participated in swim practice where they worked on open water swimming techniques. The sighting and draft linework were incredible to watch. Cabin one had a water polo class and the competition within the cabin was fierce! Cabin two continued to develop their skills in our racing canoes and kayaks with another small boats class. Cabin three had a diving lesson where they worked on diving off the board and tower; they also worked on back dives and it was very impressive to see how much they improved in such a short time. Cabin four had a beach volleyball game where they hustled hard and were diving for the ball throughout the game. Cabin five had a special opportunity to bathe one of the camp dogs named Buddha – he was very colourful from our colour run that we held earlier in the week.

That afternoon we held the Ak-o-mak Triathlon, this event consisted of a swim, run, and then a paddle. The swim was an open watercourse, the run took the campers out on the trails, and the campers were required to solo a canoe for the paddle. Our eleven and under campers had the option of sea kayaking instead of canoeing. Every camper participated and completed the race. It was amazing to see our girls challenge themselves by tackling such a hard event here at camp. The feeling of pride and accomplishment was felt all around camp after this event. We are quite excited for our final week of the summer – it will be jam-packed with fun events and athletic endeavours.
