Camp Update: July 17-20th, 2022

On Sunday, July 17th we had another wonderful Sunday at camp. We had our annual Ak-o-mak triathlon which consisted of the campers swimming in open water, running the trails, and then soloing a canoe. All of our campers participated and completed this event. It was inspiring to see their grit and determination while they competed in this fun race. That evening, the campers enjoyed the lovely Sunday cookout for dinner which consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie burgers. There was also salad, chips, carrots with dip and of course cake! After the cookout, we all headed down to the campfire to roast some marshmallows and share our stories about our experience in the Ak-o-mak Triathlon! We laughed, sang songs and admired the beautiful view of the lake.

On Monday we incorporated mindfulness into our daily schedule. It was another hot and sunny day at camp. The campers had swim practice in the morning, followed by a paddling session in the small boats, and then a yoga class all before lunch! That afternoon our adventurous campers headed out on a long bike ride to Duck Rock where they were rewarded with an ice cream cone for their efforts. The campers who chose to stay at camp enjoyed a leisurely paddle to Ahmic Lake Lodge for their ice cream cones. We all met back up at camp for an open waterfront before dinner. That evening we continued our mindful Monday activities with a talk about the importance of sleep and proper sleep hygiene for our campers. Program director Mackenna led a sleep meditation before we all headed back to our cabins to go to bed.

On Tuesday we had an exciting visitor – Heather MacLean, a Canadian Olympian. She led swim practice and shared her Olympic story with all of us. After practice, she also led a discussion about how to succeed in sport while taking care of yourself at the same time. Our campers thoroughly enjoyed asking Heather all their questions and loved receiving her autograph after the inspirational chat. It really was a treat! That afternoon the campers had their choice of water activities: sailing, diving, canoeing or water aerobics!

On Wednesday, the war canoe went out for early bird – there really isn’t anything better than an early morning paddle on our beautiful lake! After breakfast, the campers enjoyed activities such as swim practice, volleyball, golf, and a kayaking adventure. Unfortunately, our nice weather streak ended that afternoon. During the rain, the campers competed in the well-loved cabin lip sync competition. They spent all afternoon preparing and practicing their routines and performed them right before dinner. What a wonderful day full of sport and creativity!
