Girls Mountain Biking

One of our favourite things to do at Camp Ak-O-Mak is to hit the trails on our mountain bikes. We find that a lot of our campers who come to us have not tried mountain biking before, but they leave camp with a passion for the freedom and the speed that the sport brings.

Here are the top reasons we think more girls should start mountain biking.

1. Get In Touch With Nature

One of the best reasons to try mountain biking is the beautiful nature you get to experience while you’re out on the trails. You can escape the busy bustle of city life and experience tranquil trees disconnected from your phone, finally!

By focusing on navigating rocks and tree roots, you can focus on what’s ahead and truly be present in the moment. There’s something magical about hearing only the birds, summer cicadas, and your wheels on the trail. Mountain biking is one of the best things you can do to take advantage of the weather on a beautiful day.

2. A Good Way To Exercise

Mountain biking is an awesome way to exercise. Not only does it require the technical skills of riding a bike on an uneven trail, it’s a great way to get in some cardio.

Mountain biking requires a great deal of balance especially when navigating a “skinny” route, plus you engage your core so you get a little ab workout. The best thing about getting exercise while mountain biking is that you’re having so much fun you barely even notice that you’re actually exercising.

Oh, and did we mention endorphins? Endorphins are chemicals your body releases during exercise that cause a natural high and quite literally make you happier – not bad for a day on the trails!

3. Smells Like Adventure

There’s something thrilling and completely addicting about mountain biking. Every time you head into the forest, you never know what the day is going to bring you.

Whether you’re zooming down a hill or popping off a dirt jump, you’re bound to get your adrenaline pumping every time you get on your mountain bike.

4. Camaraderie

Mountain biking is an amazing bonding experience with friends and family. A little trailside chit-chat while you’re riding along the trail or taking a break can help you really connect with people and make lifelong friends.

You’re always going to make great memories and get great stories in the great outdoors when you’re mountain biking. Plus, the mountain biking community spans the world and is very supportive; they are always happy to teach new skills and push your limits.

5. Good For Competition

Everyone loves a little friendly competition, and mountain biking is no different. Whether you’re having a casual race up a hill on the trails with friends, or decide to enter yourself into competitive mountain biking, there’s always an opportunity to win, or make yourself better so you can win next time!

Plus, women’s mountain biking is seriously lacking girls so why not bring your passion to build up the competitive community? Even better, you can show up the boys!

 6. Build Up Your Confidence

As fun as mountain biking is, let’s be honest, it’s not easy. It forces you out of your comfort zone and to try things you never dreamed of. Mountain biking is a very real way to set goals and literally feel when you’ve accomplished them.

Once you master a specific technique or that tricky descent while navigating logs and not falling off your bike, you feel a tremendous sense of accomplishment. This achievement skyrockets your confidence, which is a pretty great feeling if you ask us. If you can do this, what can’t you do!?

Trying mountain biking is just downright fun. At Camp Ak-O-Mak, we have a fleet of bikes suitable for all sizes, so all of our girls have the chance to fall in love with mountain biking. Sign up for next summer now and get ready to explore all of our mountain biking trails around camp!
