Before competitive triathlons became popular and mainstream, campers at Camp Ak-O-Makwere already swimming, and running, and canoeing in competition with their brother camp, Chikopi. And today, our Competitive Triathlon Campis already well established, and amongst the finest for young women in Ontario, and across Canada.
The Triathlon actually consists of a variety of competitive levels, but is basically an endurance event that consists of swimming, cycling, and running - all in immediate succession and over varying distances. In a competition situation, triathletes compete for the fastest overall completion-time, including timed “transitions” between swimming, biking and running. At Camp Ak-O-Mak, the Competitive Triathlon Campemphasizes the full extent of performance training, including general strength/conditioning, endurance improvement, aerobic development, and training efficiency. The key is consistency, and our coaches always stress progressive training.
Our objective is to train young women athletes to become well-rounded, successful competitors. We believe in consistent, progressive training, along with an individual coaching approach to highlight the strengths of the individual. Engaging in practice events like aquathlons, duathlons, transition events, and mountain bike courses, the staff at our Competitive Triathlon Camp teach the fundamentals of the sport, with the added component of competition. Our campers are coached and supervised by retired Olympians, past world-class athletes who are sports experts, and who truly understand what it takes to be a champion.
Camp Ak-O-Makis also about building character. We live in an atmosphere of self-empowerment, and our coaches teach campers how to tackle a triathlon of any distance. The Competitive Triathlon Camphelps campers to improve transition times and performance levels using a variety of training techniques and activities. We use practice events like aquathlons (two-stage races starting with swimming and followed by running) and duathlons (running, cycling, running). And we also employ mountain bike obstacle courses and road bikes instructionto improve the cycling component of the triathlon.
Staff and coaches at our Competitive Triathlon Campare just amazing - they foster teamwork; they promote an atmosphere of cooperation and collaboration; and they engender goal-setting attitudes that empower the individual. It’s a culture of teamwork that nurtures creativity, and motivates young women to excel. Camp Ak-O-Makis located in the heart of cottage country, in central Ontario(3.5 hours north of Toronto, Canada).
