Parents naturally want the best for their kids. That’s why we decided to send our daughters to Camp Ak-O-Mak, a specialty sports camp in Canada. Our daughters want to excel at their sports so it was important to have training and coaching throughout the summer. Camp Ak-O-Mak was the Canadian sports camp for us that really had it all: a rustic, natural environment, a wide range of sports activities as well as the fun traditions of summer camp.
Camp Ak-O-Mak is one of the first specialty sports camps for girls in North America. The camp is located three hours north of Toronto on a beautiful lake in the Parry Sound area. Summer camp sessions are offered for girls age 7-16 which was ideal for our daughters. The competitive yet supportive nature of the instructional sports programs was a good recipe for performance excellence sought by one of our daughters. Our other daughter, however, enjoyed the opportunity to participate in recreational sports programs at a more leisurely pace. Both girls loved the variety of activities Camp Ak-O-Mak offered such as open water swimming, kayak racing and various land sports.
Camp Ak-O-Mak is more than just a specialty sports camp. It is also an authentic Canadian camping experience – back to nature, free of technology and electricity. Our daughters were excited to bunk with girls of the same age, sharing wooden cabins with an excellent camper/counselor ratio.
We were happy to learn that the traditional pleasures of summer camp were alive and well, like campfires, sing-a-longs, and camaraderie. We believe that the environment at Ak-O-Mak enhances the development of character and personal growth outside of the home. It is so rewarding for parents to witness this growth in character and to see our girls create long lasting friendships.
The range of activities at Ak-O-Mak made it possible for our daughters to explore and develop other interests. Ak-O-Mak is the ideal Canadian sports camp, the place to master a sport and develop team skills.
Camp Ak-O-Mak offers instruction, training, and coaching in dozens of sports activities – everything from mountain biking, to canoeing and sailing, to baseball and soccer, to field hockey and water polo. The camp counselors are stellar - young women who demonstrate a capability to teach; who have a positive attitude; and who have a desire to coach young girls all while self-enhancing esteem.
We were quite impressed with the counselors who had coaching certificates and other credentials in disciplines like drama and photography. Beyond their athleticism, we found the counselors to be effective role models and mentors for our daughters. The counselors actually live with their campers and agree to a strict code of conduct including camper confidentiality provisions.
Campers may choose a sports camp in Canada for the coaching and training, but they agree that one summer at Ak-O-Mak has a way of changing life in so many more important ways.
At Camp Ak-O-Mak they can focus on sportsmanship, athletic excellence, making lifelong friendships all while building upon the foundations of self confidence and character.
There’s a reason why girls return to Camp Ak-O-Mak year after year. To learn more, call the camp office directly at 416-427-3171, or visit the camp’s website at https://www.campakomak.com .
