We have enjoyed another beautiful week here at Ak-o-Mak! On the weekend we were all treated to a special self-defence class with Rosie. Campers learned practical defence techniques and practiced using their strong voices. We had another spirited team comp activity where the campers created alibi’s for the mystery of ‘Brett’s Missing Bike’ – the skits were hilarious and creative! Our campers also competed in a three-kilometre swim around the island on Monday. All who chose to swim completed the distance and had an amazing time. Those that did not want to swim were amazing help as they paddled and cheered for the swimmers. We have enjoyed some beautiful camp activities such as gunnel bobbing, small boats, and diving. It is amazing to see each of our campers progress in their skills.
On August third we had our annual Olympic Day! After the opening ceremonies, our land sports began. The athletes competed in rowing, track & field events, volleyball, soccer, spike ball, badminton and tennis. After a delicious lunch, candy store, and rest hour the water sports began. We kicked off the afternoon with our swim meet. The long course and short course pools held all the events. We had relays, fun races, and classic swim events. The cheering from the stands was enthusiastic and exuded team spirit. Then the campers headed to their team events such as synchro, small boats, log rolling, and diving. The closing ceremonies put everyone on the edge of their seats since first, second, and third place was separated by one point each. The closest Olympic Day competition in Ak-O-Mak history!!
On Wednesday we said goodbye to our two-week campers. It was sad to see them go but it was lovely having them and we hope to see them all again next year. The three-week campers enjoyed a morning of swim practice and paddling in the small boats, sea kayaks and canoes. The afternoon was another sunny and sticky day so the campers headed back out onto the water for an option of diving, stroke correction, or paddleboarding. We finished off the day with an open waterfront. It was a lovely day in the sun!
