Thanksgiving Weekend at Ak-O-Mak
One of the greatest things about living on the 45th parallel is watching the changing of the seasons and Camp Ak-O-Mak has to be one of the most beautiful places to witness this spectacle of nature. This weekend Canadians celebrated their Thanksgiving holiday and the amazing weather made it one of the most memorable for us at camp. It was the perfect backdrop for our volunteer work weekend.
Typically by October we are under the raw chill of autumn, requiring the donning of hats and mittens to fortify ourselves against the cold as we close down camp for the season. This autumn, however, has been kinder and gentler, lacking the typical blustering winds or sideways rains which cruelly strip the colour from the trees and the “magic” from the forests.
This weekend in particular, we enjoyed sunny days as warm as any during the summer, so T-shirts and shorts were the requisite work uniforms for us! The vibrant blue skies provided striking contrast to the explosion of yellows, oranges and crimsons that made the view around Camp Ak-O-Mak breathtaking! As our small group of volunteers worked outside, we were compelled over and over to tilt our faces heavenward, basking in the sun’s warmth and inhaling the scent of dried leaves and spruce trees… an instinctive gesture of gratitude for this gift of nature.
Over the years Thanksgiving has become one of my favourite holidays. It’s not so commercialized. I like the fact that there are no presents to distract me from that which I am most grateful… my beautiful daughter, a loving husband and family, good health, truly wonderful friends, a meaningful life, a full pantry… in other words, an abundant life.
I am also thankful for Camp Ak-O-Mak. It is a place that continues to inspire throughout the stages of one’s life. I am grateful for her friends, new and old, who are drawn to her like a touch stone and who, by graciously giving back with their energies and resources, help the “old girl” flourish!
To quote George Eliot, “We could never have loved the earth so well if we had had no childhood in it.” I think the same can be said for Camp Ak-O-Mak.
Happy Thanksgiving
Jocelyn Saunders at 70.3 Triathlon World Championships in LasVegas
In April this year I qualified for 70.3 World Championships in Vegas at the 70.3 in Texas in April. I had a great race there, especially considering I had spent the winter recovering from a separated shoulder sustained while mountain biking with our junior triathletes in November. I had 2 weeks to celebrate before I broke my collarbone on a junior road ride on Good Friday. After 10 days I had surgery putting a plate over my collarbone to help me heal. At first I was overwhelmed by the pain and the necessity of recovering again from a crash, but thankfully the healing process began with the help of my
family and friends.
After missing some key races, I did a couple of sprints and left for my favorite place, camp. For 7 weeks I coached,
trained, laughed, and played. By the end of camp I won 3 small triathlons, placing 6th in the men in the Barrie Triathlon. I had 2 weeks to prepare for Worlds when I returned home.
I arrived in Henderson, Nevada on the Monday before the race. It is beautiful and very hot. The water was hot, the air was hot, it was hot day and night, and I was always thirsty. By the 3rd day I had a skin condition caused by the heat, and all around me athletes were worried or scared about the combination of the heat and the hills.
Training on the bike course was amazing! Most of the bike course cycles through Lake Mead recreation park, and the desert is awesome with bright blue patches of Lake Mead here and there. On the third day I was running up a hill in over a 100 degrees and my heart felt like it was pounding like crazy. I spent this week training, spending time with old friends and meeting new friends. I went to the Cirque de soleil Beatles show with my friend Susanne and then to the Hoover Dam by myself. One of the highlights for me was catching up with my triathlon coach from my early days, Kevin Mackinnon. An accomplished journalist and coach, Kevin has done so much for the sport of triathlons. Back in his early days he coached Lori Bowden, Lisa Bentley and myself, as well as taking a number of his runner to Olympic trials in 1992. At the banquet on Friday I learned that the course was designed to be similar in toughness to Hawaii. No wonder it felt so similar.
Saturday I was more nervous then normal due to the intimidating course, the 10th anniversary of 9/11, and it was 10 years prior that I had been hit by a car while riding on Mother’s Day and told I would never run again. I had shattered my knee into 21 pieces requiring a screw to be put in my knee to hold all the pieces of my patella that they found in the hole that was my then knee, damaged my back requiring a back surgery, I had fluid in my abdomen requiring an emergency abdominal surgery, a neck injury and a head injury. It had taken me years to recover, and 10 years later I was so grateful to be racing at World Championships.
Thankfully Sunday morning arrived, and I happily got ready for the canon to start the race. Standing in our wave I wondered why all of us women were standing behind the executive challenge men, and so I slipped into the water first, ahead of them. It was an in water start. I started with the lead pack, but after around 500 m I slipped back a bit and swam comfortably in 5th place. We swam in Lake Las Vegas out and back with a long run back to transition. Coming out of transition there is a climb so that is the first challenge of the bike. I drank, ate, and took my endurolytes on the bike keeping my heart rate relatively low. I passed competitors on the climbs, but got killed on the downhills. Next year I would ride with an 11 instead of a 12 on my cassette, so I could pedal more down the hills instead of spinning out. One downhill I was going 40.5 mph. I got off the bike 12th ready to give it all on the run. It is a 3 loop course running either up or
down hills which is punishing to the legs. I felt great on the run passing lots of people including some female pros, finishing with a sub 6:00 minute mile. I had the 3rd fastest run in my age group, and I finished 6th overall in my age group. My old coach Kevin told me that our age group was stacked with former pros, one of them I beat by 10 seconds, and Donna Kay-Ness who holds age group records at Ironman Hawaii and finished 2nd in our age group. After the race we waited in
this long shuttle ride to take us back to our hotels, and so the burger, fries, ice cream and coke tasted even better waiting so long for it. It was such fun that afternoon and evening chatting with people I met at the race. Later that night I went out with my friend Kevin, and the guys that do ironmanlive and the television coverage. The lead guy has won 18 Emmys, wow!
So I return grateful that car didn’t kill me 10 years ago, grateful to have watched my kids grow up these past 10 years, grateful to have had another 10 great years with Blair, grateful to have trained and raced in the sport I love for these past 10 years, and grateful for all of you who have made my life so much better!

Ahmic Harbour 3 Mile Swim

On Monday we were joined by Chikopi for the Ahmic Harbour 3 mile swim.
They paddled over in their caravan of white and green canoes to meet us at Ak-O-Mak for the morning start. The skies were blue, just as we had been hoping and the wind that seemed to have been a constant visitor decided to go elsewhere for the day. The conditions were perfect for both the swimmers and the paddlers. Almost 100 swimmers swam the route over the rocks and through the lily pads, up the channel toward the finish line!
After a great race by all, here are the results!

Telephone Time
Today (Sunday) is the day that you can finally begin to call in and speak to your camper!
Just a few reminders:
Each camper is only permitted one telephone call, if you would like to have further contact sign up for BunkNotes or send some snail-mail. Remember, if you send them 3 pieces of mail they get to sing a song in front of the Main House and 5 pieces of mail meeeaaaans….IN THE LAKE!
Phone calls are limited to 5 minutes. We have lots of campers who are anxiously waiting to hear from their loved ones as well, so in order to give everyone a chance at the telephone we ask that phone calls are kept to 5 minutes.
Calls are only taken during meal-times:
Breakfast: 8:30 am – 9:15 am
Lunch: 1:00 pm – 1:45 pm
Dinner: 6:00 pm – 6:45 pm
If we do not answer the telephone it is because we are out of camp for that meal, try again the following meal. On Sunday evenings we are not in the Main House for dinner because we have a barbeque on Sandy Beach.
Tomorrow (Monday) we will be having an early breakfast so you can call your camper between 8am and 8:30, however we will not be in the Main House for lunch so no one will be answering the camper line.
The Camper telephone line is 705-387-1919
This is the only line that you will be able to reach your camper on so please do not call our business line.
If no one answers that is because there is currently a camper on the line, please be patient and call back again.
Thanks so much and Happy Camping!

Busy Fun Days at Camp
Come With Me to Camp Chikopi
Knoefli Mile Swim and Water Day!
Today the girls enjoyed a little sleep-in and break from early bird before we headed over to Camp Chikopi for our first race against the boys this session.
We couldn’t have asked for better weather, the sun shone brightly and the lake was so still it looked as if you could skate across it. What a perfect day for a race!
After breakfast everyone loaded into 31 orange and green cedar strip canoes to meet our brothers for the start across the lake.
Once we arrived the girls dawned their gear for battle! Latex caps covered their perfectly quaffed hair, primped just-so for the onlooking boys and goggles were strapped tightly around their eyes. The counselors were also ready for the race, with orange and green war-paint on their faces and arms.
The campers slipped into the water and anxiously awaited the shot from the pistol! BANG! And they’re off down the mile course, before you could blink a camper from Chikopi was already 10 meters ahead of everyone else and quickly speeding off. However, Samantha S., Brooke S., Gillian T., and Isabella J. were hot on his heels pulling and kicking their way through the Chikopi swimmers.
The scene at the finish was worthy of any sports-news broadcast with battles for higher placing popsicle-sticks and campers quickly swimming over others to get a stick before another. In the end 4 campers from Ak-O-Mak took places in the top-10 overall:
Samantha S. 2nd
Brooke S. 4th
Gillian T. 6th
Isabella J. 8th
The great race was followed by a delicious lunch back at Chikopi and field-day festivities in the beautiful sunshine. Campers chucked the wellie, somersaulted down the cheese block, tumbled after dizzy-Lizzies, and raced around on mini bikes! Cheering and giggles could be heard all over the camp!
Following all the stations and games was a very intense match of tug-of-war. All of the campers, in their blue shorts and white t-shirts grabbed a section of the giant rope making a technicolour rainbow of chipped nailpolish all the way down. They planted their feet deep into the ground and “HEAVE, HO, HEAVE, HO!” in a few giant tugs they had pulled all of the Camp Chikopi campers across to their end winning the first round! On for round two, with a few minor adjustments to who was standing where and some tightened shoe-laces the girls were ready to go. 3-2-1-PUUUUULLLLLLLLL! Ak-O-Mak wins again! For the last round it was EVERYONE from Chikopi against the might and strength of EVERYONE from Ak-O-Mak. Counselors, senior staff, C.I.T.’s, campers, kitchen staff, and anyone else each camp could find grabbed a hold of the giant rope, dug down deep, and held on as tight as they possibly could. “HEAVE, HO!” from both sides, and no body budged. “PULL” was chanted in high female voices and finally we could feel a little movement in the rope, “PUUUUUULLLLLL” a little more….then suddenly everyone went flying back! The force of both mighty camps had in fact snapped the rope in half!
Once we had picked ourselves up, and dusted ourselves off it was time to paddle home into the beautiful sunset.
Stay posted for the results of the Knoepfli Mile Swim.
Happy Camping,
Hayley
Around the World in 14 Days
Horis and Boris, have enlisted the help of the campers to find their dear friend Morris. Horis and Boris are employed by the Astonishing Race to travel around the world taking pictures of Morris – the orange flamingo – in different countries where the contestants have to travel. Horris – the responsible of the two – let Boris watch Morris for 2 layovers and now Morris is nowhere to be found. The producers of the Astonishing Race can’t film the next season without their Tourology flamingo.
Yesterday campers were given their Camp Ak-O-Mak passport and their traveling skills were put to the test. They had to try and travel to as many countries as possible and complete a challenge to receive the countries stamp. In Switzerland campers had to climb a mountain, yodel at the top and then slide down, in Canada they climbed to the top of a tree, they cycled in the tour de France, swam across the English Channel, ran with the bulls in Spain and paddled a gondola in Italy.
Teams are now being sent on a quest around the world in 14 days to locate Morris and return him safely to the producers of the Astonishing Race. Along the way they will have to compete head-to-head in feats of whit, strength and endurance. They will also be challenged by “street lumps” (a challenge that an individual on the team must complete) and “indirect routes” (a choice between two challenges that teams must complete before continuing on).
As I sit here and type half of the teams are out on a paddling adventure for ice-cream, while the other teams create their new nations flag, national anthem, and national animal. Tomorrow the other half of the contestants will embark on the journey for ice cream while the others determine what new countries they will be from.
Happy Camping,
Hayley
We welcome you all to our camp!
Two week has begun without a hitch! All the girls have moved into their rustic cabins and settled into their cozy bunks for their two weeks stay at Camp Ak-O-Mak. Surrounded by the signatures and graffiti of campers past and present sure gives the campers a feel that they are part of something with quite an expansive history. Women who have gone on to swim across Lake Ontario and compete in the Olympics have all slept in the same cabins and signed the same walls.
Old friendships are being renewed and new ones have very quickly been forged. Looking out at all of the campers in their classes their relationships have already begun to resemble that of long-lost sisters. Each morning a different cabin has the option to go for a cycling voyage with our cycling coach Carla, or a run on the beautiful cross country trails. There is rarely a quiet moment on the campus now that everyone has arrived. Shrieks of excitement, laughs and giggles, sing-songs and chants fill the fresh late summer air. These jovial sounds of campers are joined by the commands and instructions of coaches and counselors at activities. The campers have already been busy learning new skills with classes in sailing, cycling, cross country running, tennis, field hockey, soccer, and of course swimming. Since the summer has been so warm and gorgeous the lake has been ideal for early bird swims and swim practice every day.
Everyone had the opportunity to learn each other’s names and where they come from at the paddle picking ceremony. There are campers and staff that have been here 10 years and more as well as a great mix of new campers.
There are so many exciting activities in store for these next two weeks, I can hardly wait!
Happy Camping,
Hayley
Camp Ak-O-Mak Girls Shine at Kids of Steel Triathlon
The excitement is always high when the Ak-O-Mak girls head out for an event and this weekend was no exception. The fun started with the boarding of the big orange school bus on Saturday afternoon, destination: the city of Barrie and the Kids of Steel Triathlon! This was the largest Camp Ak-O-Mak Tri-Team ever, with 38 girls competing in ALL age groups:
DIVISION: SWIM - BIKE – RUN
6-7 yo: 50m – 1.5km – 500m
8-9: 100m – 5km – 1km
10-11: 200m – 5km – 2km
12-13: 300m – 10km – 3km
14-15: 500m – 10km – 4km
Adult Triathlon: 700m – 20km – 5km
Adult Duathlon: 5km Run – 20km – 5km
The bus travelled straight to the beach at Centennial Park in Barrie where veteran triathlete and Coach Jocelyn Saunders oriented the girls to the course layout and transition area. This was time well spent in order to avoid confusion the next day when the area would be packed with over 700 racers, thousands of spectators and loud lively music, all adding to the excitement of this fabulous event!
Once everyone had their race kits and numbers in hand, tummies were a’rumblin’ so it was off to dinner at the Market Buffet Restaurant. Our girls are always a sight whenever we go somewhere “en mass” and one is instantly aware of the wholesome and healthy appearance of this group. Although dressed alike in their white Ak-O-Mak uniform shirts and navy shorts, it is impossible not to notice the wonderful individuality and beauty of each camper. We felt so proud watching the girls exit the bus. The little ones are the quintessential “Ak-O-Mak Angels”, uniform shirts a bit too long, eyes wide with anticipation and, unlike their older ‘sisters’, completely un-phased if their hair has escaped the well-intentioned braid or elastic applied that morning. The older girls are fit and tanned, their long tresses contained in ‘speed buns’ or pony tails which are reconstructed twenty times a day. A few campers sported pink noses suggestive of a little too much sun from the day before. All have lovely sun bleached highlights throughout their hair and bronzed, sun-kissed skin, bearing testimony to their days playing outside in the fresh air…like kids are supposed to do during summer!
With friendship bracelets on their wrists and well worn flip flops or sneakers on their feet, the girls filed into the restaurant, ‘best manners’ already evident. They chattered excitedly amongst themselves, looking forward to staying in a hotel that night. It is always interesting to see how the modern conveniences of the real world are appreciated by campers who have been living rustically for weeks. (After all, that IS the whole point!)
“Wow! Air conditioning! Real beds tonight! Sheets! I’m having a hot shower! It’s a bath for me! Look at all this food! Where do we start? Holy Cow! Look at those desserts! I’m starting there!”
Parents, no need to fret that your child ate only marshmallow ice cream and chocolate sprinkles for dinner because Dianne and Catherine were on the scene with maternal reminders to “veggie up” those plates that needed it.
After dinner the girls had time for a swim in the hotel pool before turning in for the night. Everyone was “lights out” ahead of schedule, snuggled into cozy beds under downy comforters, way too tired and comfy to be bothered by pre-race jitters.
Team Ak-O-Mak was in fine form the next morning and ready to go for every race! Our Ak-O-Mak triathletes led the swim in every event and had strong performances in the bike and runs.
Our littlest angels showed they were demons on the course! Camp Ak-O-Mak’s youngest competitor was 6 year old Marley E. who finished a respectable 11th out of a field of 29 athletes in her category. Molly Tr. took fourth place among the 8-9 year olds, just seconds behind the silver and bronze medal winners.
It was a fierce battle for second and third in the girls 10-11 event with Alicia E. (26:23.5) inching out Emma Y. (26:26.7) Emma turned in a phenomenal run and bike, posting the fastest splits for both legs among 38 competitors!
The top four places in the 12-13 year old girls event was swept by Ak-O-Makkers, first place going to Jacqui D. (who attends camp’s final session every year) with a time of 36:02.2. Second, third and fourth places crossed the finish line in rapid succession. Katarina M. took silver with a time of 37:41.4 and Abby H. Came in 49 seconds later, good enough for Bronze with a time of 38:30.6. Tara P. was a little powerhouse finishing out of the medals but a mere 27 seconds behind third place.
Ak-O-Mak had 11 triathletes in the highly competitive 14-15 year old girls category. Alexa M. and Madison H. were neck and neck to the line, finishing 6th and 7th respectively.
Brook S. handily captured the Gold medal in the adult triathlon, winning with a time of 1:10:37 almost 5 minutes ahead of her closest contender. Katie P. Was the next Ak-O-Makker over the line with a time of 1:17:28 good enough for a fourth place finish.
Dr. Jeff came with us and was a gutsy competitor in the adult duathlon. His athletic performance however paled in comparison to the fact that his medical services were required to do CPR on a 65 year old male racer who collapsed near the finish. Thanks to our Dr. Jeff, the lucky Masters triathlete was conscious and talking to the paramedics on his way to hospital in no time!
Coach Jocelyn Saunders leads by example and competed in the adult triathlon again this year. This once professional triathlete and World Championship competitor is still the one to beat at most events. Jocelyn makes racing look effortless but don’t let her apparent calm fool you. She is a formidable foe in competition! Jocelyn captured the Gold for the women’s triathlon and was 6th in the overall results combining men and women.
Way to go team! You represented Camp Ak-O-Mak superbly and with great sportsmanship. No one and I mean NO BODY out-cheered our girls as they yelled and screamed encouragement to not only their camp sisters, but other competitors as well. Music to our ears!
Well done, girls. Let’s do it again next year!
